Why you should test pond water regularly

No matter whether your pond looks healthy or not – it’s always a good idea to test the pond water from time to time. Are you struggling with problems like excessive algae growth and declining fish health? Then a test can give you insight into the cause of these issues, allowing you to take appropriate action. But even if the pond looks clear and clean at first glance, regular testing is worthwhile, as it helps detect negative developments early and prevent follow-up problems with preventive measures. By Analyzing your pond water, you’ll know exactly how to shape your subsequent Pond care to optimize the water quality and thus the health of your pond inhabitants.

Quick test for water quality – how to check your pond water:

If you choose the BioTeich quick test, you’ll receive 4 pond water test strips for 2 measurements. With these, you can perform the pond water quick test anytime yourself and get valuable information on the 7 most important parameters:

Mineralization: One of the factors you can check with our water test is mineralization. You can use the test strips as a KH test for the pond as well as a GH test (carbonate hardness and total hardness). These values are particularly important because a stable KH prevents pH fluctuations, and the correct GH ensures healthy living conditions for plants and animals.

Acid capacity: The test strips also serve as a pH test for your pond. This value indicates how acidic or alkaline the water is, using a scale from 0 to 14. Ideally, the value should be between 6.5 and 8.5. A low value means the water is too acidic, which can be harmful to fish, while a higher value indicates the pond water is too alkaline, which can promote algae growth.

Filter function: The NO2 value (nitrite) is also measured when you test your pond water with our test strips. This is a toxic byproduct that forms from bacteria and ammonia. A functional filter breaks this down quickly, so a measurable value may indicate problems in the filter system.

Algae nutrient phosphate: Another value measured when testing pond water is PO4 (phosphate). While phosphate is an important plant nutrient, too much of it is the most common cause of algae blooms.

Algae nutrient nitrate: Nitrate (NO3) is an end product of biological filtration and forms from nitrite, which in turn comes from ammonia. It is less toxic than nitrite but can lead to algae problems in high concentrations.

Fish toxins: When you use our test strips to test your pond water, you’ll also get information about the presence of fish toxins in your pond (Cl (chlorine), NO2, and NO3). If too much of these substances is in the water, it can result in fish die-off.

Pollutants: Chlorine is a pollutant that can negatively affect not only fish health but also the entire biological balance of the pond. Even small amounts can cause significant damage. So when you test the water quality in your pond, this value is also particularly important.
