BioPond MAXIMUM
Bio Pond High-Performance Filter Set
💧 FAQ: Filter technology & bio-materials for a clear natural pond
Welcome to the expert area for your pump-filter system. Here you will find answers to the most important questions about biologically optimized pond filtration with the BioTeiGa components.
Why is a well-designed pump-filter system so important?
A filter that does not work optimally can throw the entire pond ecosystem off balance. Many commercial systems only filter mechanically – that is often not enough. With the sophisticated BioPond system, on the other hand, you achieve:
✅ crystal-clear water instead of algae infestation
✅ biological self-cleaning instead of constant maintenance
✅ healthy fish and stable water conditions
Which filter materials are ideal for my pond?
Use coordinated components with clear functions – everything from one source:
🟢 BioTeich MAXIMUM
➡️ High-performance biofilter material for maximum microorganism colonization – 100 times stronger biological filtration than conventional media.
🟣 BioTeich Phosphate Converter
➡️ Special filter medium for permanent binding of phosphate and nitrogen compounds – stabilizes the pond balance naturally.
🧽 Pre-filter foam sponge (not from our range)
➡️ Used for coarse dirt filtration and protects the biological material – can be rinsed regularly.
How do I properly maintain my biofilter?
A biological filter requires different maintenance than a purely mechanical one:
- Do NOT rinse filter media such as BioTeich MAXIMUM – otherwise you will kill off the microorganisms.
- Only clean pre-filter sponges regularly (e.g. when flow rate decreases)
- After long periods of inactivity or deep cleaning: add BioTeich Aktiv to quickly rebuild the biology
🧼 Important: Coarse dirt catchers such as foam sponges or Japanese mats should be cleaned regularly. Biological filter media, on the other hand, must not be cleaned during the pond season – otherwise the vital microorganisms and biofilms will be destroyed.
❗ The consequences would be cloudy water, increased algae growth and elevated pollutant levels.
🔍 Nevertheless, you should regularly visually inspect the condition of the biological filter material to permanently maintain its functionality.
What about UVC lamps in the filter system?
🚫 Not recommended for BioPond systems!
💡 UVC light prevents the cell division of microorganisms – and these are crucial for the natural self-cleaning of your pond.
🔬 The problem: UVC does not distinguish between beneficial and harmful bacteria. It kills all of them – including the microorganisms that break down pollutants in the biofilter and keep your water clear.
❗ This can destroy the entire pond biology in the long term, disrupt the balance and reduce natural mineralization.
🌱 Our recommendation at BioTeiGa: Do without UVC technology and trust in biological processes. With the right filter material, microorganisms and targeted nutrient binding, you will achieve permanently clear, healthy water – entirely without shortcuts.
Which pump is suitable for my filter system?
For optimal performance, the following applies:
- 💧 The pump should circulate the entire pond volume every 12 hours (without fish) or every 6 hours (with fish).
- 🔄 Position the pump as far away as possible from the filter outlet.
- ⬆️ Hang it at least 20 cm above the bottom to avoid sucking up sludge.
- ⚡ Keep the pump running 24/7 during the pond season – for consistently good water values.
Sample calculation:
10,000-litre fish pond ➜ 10,000 / 6 = approx. 1,700 l/h recommended pump output
How large should the volume of my filter be?
Rule of thumb for biofilters at BioTeiGa:
Pond volume × 2 : 1000 = filter volume in litres
Example: 8,000-litre pond ➜ 8,000 × 2 : 1,000 = 16 litres filter volume
How do I correctly position the filter and return flow?
📍 Always position the filter outlet opposite the pump. This ensures that the water circulates completely through the pond and no dead zones form.
🔁 Do not introduce the return water directly at the surface, but slightly below it. This moves the water from deeper layers and supplies it with oxygen more effectively.
How do I integrate a stream, waterfall or water feature sensibly?
🌊 A stream, waterfall or water feature look great – but they do NOT replace a filter system. They should:
- be operated via a separate pump – so the important main filter circuit remains stable.
- the 2nd water circuit can then be flexibly switched on or off!
☀️ In warm months, the water in the stream can heat up significantly. This reduces the oxygen content in the pond. Therefore:
✅ Only allow the pump to draw water from the upper water layer so that the cooler, oxygen-rich water in the lower area is preserved.
How do I use my pump-filter system as efficiently as possible?
🔧 To ensure your system delivers top performance on a permanent basis, follow these pro tips:
- ✅ Check regularly whether the pump is still drawing in properly – especially after long periods of inactivity or algae growth.
- ⬆️ Keep at least 20 cm away from the pond floor – to avoid sucking up sludge and clogging the system.
- 🔁 Position the pump as far away as possible from the filter outlet – this creates effective pond circulation.
- 🕒 Run continuously (24/7) – interruptions disrupt biological filter performance.
- 🔄 Circulate the entire pond water only 2 to 4 times (with fish) per day:
With this operating method, you achieve the best balance between clarity, oxygen supply and biological stability.
