The short-wave light spectrum of a UVC lamp is used for the intensive irradiation of germs and bacteria (single-celled organisms). This prevents cell division (reproduction), causing them to gradually die off. In professional fish farming and pure Koi systems, this significantly reduces pathogens and largely prevents the spread of fish-killing diseases.
Well-known pond filter manufacturers have leveraged this knowledge in the development and marketing of new filtration systems. They recognized that using a UVC lamp can also inhibit the spread of green, cloudy water in garden ponds (which consists of single-celled suspended algae). This led to the one-year "clear water guarantee," which has contributed to the widespread use of "indispensable" UVC lamps in millions of garden ponds.
The truth, however, is that this process also releases the micro-nutrients stored in the suspended algae back into the pond water, while burning off the essential mineralization in the water. The altered nutrient balance promotes the growth of other types of algae (e.g., string or cotton algae). At the same time, the UVC lamp kills all beneficial single-celled organisms in the water, permanently disrupting the pond’s entire microbiological balance.
